It’s been a few weeks since I’ve posted a What I’m Watching This Week. [It’s been a few weeks since I’ve posted at all.] I was busy travelling to Seattle, recovering from sickness, decorating my house for the fall season, holding a garage sale, and more. But baby, I’m back! This post is going to be jammed pack with things that I have been watching these past few weeks. These first few shows are on Netflix.
Somebody Feed Phil
The first time I watched this show was with a group of other Asians with my cousins in San Antonio on a Sunday morning. I didn’t have Netflix at the time, but when my family decided to have Netflix again, the show was one of the firsts I added to my “Watch List.” There’s something about Phil Rosenthal’s love for food that I find cute and charming. I never skip the intro to the episodes *cue to me singing the theme song* and I find it adorable when he skypes his parents at the end of every episode to share his thoughts and eat the local fruit.
Talk about #foodbloggergoals as he eats from both the streets and fine-dining restaurants. He also takes time to experience the culture and history of the town and country. A piece of advice: Try not to watch this when you’re hungry or have the itch to travel.
FRIENDS
A beloved TV show by many, they recently celebrated their 25th anniversary [when their Pilot first launched on TVs across the nation]. Many have paid tribute to the milestone. This isn’t the first time I’m watching the series. My mom purchased the complete 10-season DVD set within months of the release. I have watched the series multiple times since high school. Watching the series [again] on Netflix now is like I’m watching the show for the first time. I’m laughing at the humorous jokes. I’m talking to my laptop convincing the characters to not make a bad choice as if they could hear me. I’m observing things that I didn’t notice before. For example, their fashion choices. I’m OBSESSED with their wardrobe [except for Ross’ shoes]. I want to recreate their outfits so badly. [Perhaps a new blog post is in the works?]
Have I watched as many episodes as Robert de Niro’s ex-assistant? Surprisingly, no.
Which character do I resonate with the most? It’s hard to say. I connect with ALL of them! I have the fashion sense of Rachel, optimism of Joey, totalitarian control of Monica, carefree spirit of Phoebe, committal issues of Chandler, and the diligence of Ross. I think that’s what makes the show so great. The six friends have characteristics and endure experiences that are #relatable. They’re honestly the OG #SQUADgoals.
Shane Dawson + Jeffree Star Documentary
WOW. If you want to be in the know with what’s going on the internet, you need to make time to watch these ~1 hour-long videos. Shane, Jeffree, and Andrew (Dawson’s cameraman and editor) work so hard to illustrate the riches and downfalls of the makeup community and cosmetic world. It’s very insightful.
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZywVlyogLYM&w=560&h=315]The documentary is edited in a style that showcases Shane’s personal life and the behind-the-scenes of creating his own makeup collection under Jeffree Star. Will I be purchasing his makeup? I’m not sure yet, but Shane Dawson clearly understands how to market to millions of people.
ALEXA CHUNG
I started following Alexa Chung after Queer Eye’s Tan France announced he was hosting a fashion-related show for Netflix with Alexa Chung. Alexa Chung is a fashion ICON. She just seems like a chill independent person underneath the cool, beautiful clothes she wears. She just started posting videos on YouTube this year. I started to replicate her hairstyle using a straightener. This video I’m sharing with you is so creative and inspiring. I’m definitely going to try the French fashion *lewk* sometime this fall season.
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRjKX1-ilwo&w=560&h=315]The Masked Singer
The Masked Singer is a popular show on the Eastern Hemisphere. It originated in South Korea, but the franchise has taken over the world – including America. Essentially, each performer [not necessarily a musical artist] wears the same mask and gives clues each week to help [or confuse] the audience. Then, performers go head to head to be the best singer. When a performer is eliminated, the reveal their true identity.
During its premiere season, I watched the performances on YouTube. After the show’s conclusion, I honestly did not think the show would be picked up for a second season based on the mixed impressions from people I know and the general vibe I received from watching the clips. Even though the show takes extreme security efforts to prevent judges from guessing correctly, the judges are really poor at guessing. Yet here I am, watching clips from Season 2. Personally, I don’t play the guessing game as I prefer to read the comments and concur with the internet’s hypotheses. So far, the show has done an excellent job of recruiting a range of public figures and artists.
Fin
I hope this content-heavy post makes up for my absence. I’m only want to share with you the most worthwhile videos and shows. The common theme of the shows I mention this week is the inspiration they bring in the aspects of fashion, travel, relationships, friendships, and ultimately becoming a better self. And isn’t that what we all want…a better self??
